If I am to mention anything under this title of news and events it is hard to go past what has commenced this week and that is Lent.
We have had a lovely liturgy with the school in the Ash Wednesday Mass.
The children will now focus on Project Compassion as their way of helping the poor while also making some sacrifice themselves by putting money into their Project Compassion money boxes.
In the past the school would sell icy poles to the children and the money would go to Project Compassion. They realised that this wasn’t really achieving its intended purpose, so this year they have changed their approach.
This year the children are asked to carry out some kind deed or chore for someone at home but with some monetary gain.
The payment is not to go to the child but put in their money boxes and brought to the school.
The good deed is shared with the class.
This idea is teaching the children that they need to make some sacrifice to achieve their end in helping someone else.
I commend the school for their foresight and wisdom because this is teaching the children that sacrifice is an important part of life and we can feel good by doing this because to feel good is not always what’s in it for me.
