Laudato Si

This weekend 17/18th June is the second anniversary of Pope Francis’ response to the problem of climate change with Laudato Si.  This means in common English – Our Common Home.

There has been a wonderful response to this document around the world.  Our diocese is certainly doing its part in making people aware of the urgency of being pro-active but also being aware and understand why we need to do something – now.

Lyn Breen and Sr Cecelia Merrigan are going around the diocese doing workshops or giving talks even in individual parish to give parishioners every opportunity to be informed.

Pope Francis is using strong language when he says, ‘Society, through non-governmental organisations and intermediate groups, must put pressure on governments to develop more rigorous regulations, procedures and controls.  Unless citizens control political power – national, regional and municipal – it will not be possible to control damage to the environment.’

Then Francis shares some beautiful thoughts and reflections and prayers, such as this.

Creator of heaven and earth, we praise you, for the gift of Mother Earth, its spendour and beauty; a common home for us all; You entrusted us with its care; we are humbled by this honour.

We recognise Father, the changes needed in our world.

We seek your help.
